Well, that`s complicated, it really depends on how good the anime is in relation to the manga or vice versa. In some cases the manga is beter, in some cases the anime, and in some they are both equally enjoyable. In some cases, like naruto, I prefer the manga, which spends much less time in light-hearted humor and gets more to the point. But in cases like full metal alchemist and inuyaha I must say that the additions of color and music really do it for me, especially with fma.

to reply to blackhope 146, yes I too enjoy fantasy literature, but I think some themes are over done, and much is simple representation of arthurian legend and the works of Tolkien, whereas anime and manga bring new thing to the table that are refreshing to the reader or viewer who eventually becomes bored with western standards of storytelling.
p.s You should try steven eriksons malazan book of the fallen series if you haven`t already.

Personally, idc. I suppose if you want to start a new anime, ask someone which one you should start with. But I think most people would say manga...

Try Dragonlance Chronicles for a good fantasy read, oh and btw if i do become a movie director, expect Dragonlance to be the next big hit in theaters...

I`ve just begun reading the first dragonlance cronicles book, being a huge dragon obsessive. Has any one here read the wheel of time?
Edit: Any writers here?

I prefer manga over anime, most of the time I read a manga then I don't even touch the anime. Not that I hate anime or anything (wouldn't be here if I did), I don't really know why I do that X3
But I think it is good to watch both, especially the ones that are pretty different from their manga counterpart, like FMA (everyone should read that, pure awesomeness) and Chrono Crusade. And if you don't like the manga, just stop reading it, or if you don't like the anime, just stop watching that X)

I could have not said it better myself. I just about all ways read the manga first unless my friend has the DVD`s but not the manga in that case I will watch the anime first.

I prefer anime because it hits more of your senses. I like to have sound because it makes it so much more for me. The music especially can totally change how you view things. Music totally makes a heartwarming moment more, and its always great to have awesome action music to fight scenes.

i dunno.... i think you should watch the anime before the manga, so you get an idea in your idea of what the full attacks look like, and get an idea of what the voices are like. but then, the manga is better, because there's no filler, and it's exactly what the author wants you to see.
however, there are certain things that can't be read, and have to be watched. like rock lee's fights. they're all so fast, and full of motion, that single-frames can't express the intensity. another thing i like about anime that manga doesn't have is music.
so, i guess both have their pros and cons.

manga for me. It's really more detailed and usually, the anime has cut many scenes that you can read from the manga

It always depends on the story, we all can argue about each side but when it comes down to it, what holds your interest longer? which gets you excited for the next installment? which makes you hold your breath as the it fully reaches the climax of the story? there is no clear winner just two alternate brands of entertainment loosely based-off each other to maximize fans and profit...

Most manga isn't in color and that bugs me a bit. Plus having to read it backward drives me crazy! I love color, and I love music! Oh, I almost forgot the sound effects, gotta love those as well.
