Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden

Postby Themax37 » July 7th, 2006, 11:06 am

I was just wondering if anybody here as read this manga and what your thoughts are on it.... I haven't read it but I hope the anime is released for it considering its not too old.

Heres some info on it from anime news network

Plot Summary: Takiko is a girl who is sad, lonely, and unpopular at school. Her mother is sick and dying, the man she loves is married to someone else, and her father spends months away from home. However, on the day her mother dies, and her father brings home an odd book called "The Universe of the Four Gods", Takiko is pulled into the book and discovers herself to be the Genbu no Miko in a time when she is not welcome ....

Here's a pic of Takiko and the Genbu 7

It takes place 200 years before the events of Fushigi Yuugi and it's about the 1st priestess..... in the real world it is less time

About the Genbu Kaiden

The Genbu Seishi had a very minor role in the original Fushigi Yuugi series, appearing for only two or three chapters in volume 9 and a few minutes in episode 34 of the anime. Despite this they made a tremendous impact on some fans of the series (myself included) being these mysterious, increadibly loyal super powerful seishi that not even Nakago wanted to fight. But there was so little known about them! What else was there to do other than sit back and write epic length fanfictions?

Now almost a decade after Fushigi Yuugi's completion Watase has begun publishing a new Fushigi Yuugi story: the Genbu Kaiden which focuses on none other than the Genbu Seishi and Takiko. Although it follows a similar story line to Fushigi Yuugi, Watase has decided to change certain aspects of it (as can be expected from 10 years of creative development!) so not only has her artwork improved, but the entire telling of the story is much more dramatic! Some people expected the Genbu Kaiden to be a cheap spin off of Fushigi Yuugi, but so far it goes way beyond the first Fushigi Yuugi in both artwork and story.

The Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden manga by Watase Yuu was first published in a japanese manga compilation magazine called Sho-Comi in 2003. Currently new chapters are published every three months in the Fushigi Yuugi Perfect World magazine, and new volumes of the manga come out every six months. The series is still being produced in Japanese, but the North American edition has already been liscened by Viz.

The story takes place in 1923 introducing Takiko Okuda, a japanese student who has recently moved from Tokyo to her mothers hometown of Morioka. Her mother is dying of tuberculosis, yet Takiko's father is never home. When he does return home, he is obsessed with completing a translation of a chinese novel. Yoshie unfortunately dies just as he's finished it, and Takiko is enraged that he was more concerned with the book than Yoshie. In a fury, Takiko tries to rip apart the book, but is engulfed in light. When she wakes up, she finds herself on a snow covered mountain...

So would you recommend watching this before or after Fushigi Yuugi?

I haven't actually started watching Fushigi Yuugi.. I've read the manga up till volume 4.. that's what happens when you're stuck at the library after summerschool and you realize that the media page is blocked, then you just pick up the manga and start reading :P

So did anybody here read the manga? I just want to know your oppinions from what you've read of it.

Note: I am not really into reading manga but if it takes too long for the series to be released I will just read it.

It's very cheap I don't really see any reason not to buy it unless you hate that kind of stuff.

Well thing is if I buy it I won't necessarily read it again, it's just like anime and movies, I can't watch the same thing twice unless if I have to :P But if the library doesn't have it yet then I'll go buy it :D
